What is Biotechnology Biotechnology is the use of living things or natural processes to make products. It generally refers to farming, food processing, and medicine. The word can also be used more loosely for non-living substances produced by living creatures, such as silk made by caterpillars. Biotechology can be applied in several aspects for example it can be applied in food processing industries where organisms are created that produce specific proteins that give the food a taste or color that would not occur naturally. Biotechnology has many applications in everyday life whether you know it or not because there are enzymes created by biotechology to help digest your food better. Because of the use of biotechnology a lot of food companies have been able to create a taste that is better then what is naturally created by a plant or animal. Biotechnology can also be used to help people who are ill because it helps them heal faster and be more healthy. Biotechnology has been used very successfully around the world and around the world as well as here in America as well as around the world. The word Biotechnology was coined by Maurice Hilleman back in 1959. Hilleman created vaccines for diseases such as polio and rubella before his death on November 14, 2008 at the age of 103. Maurice Hilleman had created a strain of E. coli bacteria that produces a stable vaccine to slow the movement of food from the small intestine. Maurice Hilleman passed away November 2010 after a long and happy life, his legacy will live on through his work and accomplishments. Biotechnology is important because it can be used in many aspects for example it can be used in food processing industries where organisms are created that produce specific proteins that give the food a taste or color that would not occur naturally. Biotechnology has been used very successfully around the world and around the world as well as here in America as well as around the world. DNA is a type of nucleic acid that contains information required for cellular reproduction. It is made up of two intertwined strands of biochemical units, called nucleotides, which are formed from sugars and phosphoric acid. DNA molecules have a helix shape, consisting of two nucleotide strands, coiled about each other to form a double helix. The two DNA strands are also known as polynucleotides since they are made up of simpler units called nucleotides. A nucleotide has three parts: − A sugar molecule (e.g. deoxyribose, ribose etc.) − A phosphate (e.g. 5H, 5O, 6C) − A nitrogenous base (e.g. guanine = Adenine; cytosine = Cytosine; thymine = Thymine; uracil stuck to the bottom of the sugar-phosphate backbone (Uracil stuck to the bottom of the sugar-phosphate backbone (Guanine stuck to the bottom of DNA) The strands are held together by hydrogen bonds in a covalent bond, where each carbon in one strand bonds to one oxygen in another strand. cfa1e77820
